An upcoming text-based rpg being developed with the RPG Module for Drupal.

Welcome, Spindowner

Dryad-Fellows Substation X was a bustling intergalactic hub in the core of the empire. A symbol of commerce and cooperation, it hosted thousands of corporate powers for dozens of alien races. Systems for hundreds of parsecs used the hub for coordinating their trade and commerce.

One of the largest artificial structures in existence, the slowly rotating wheel hosted millions of inhabitants, calling themselves Spindowners, in addition to the millions who passed through daily on their way to one system or another.

Then disaster struck. In a targeted act of violence that sparked an intergalactic war, the substation was crippled, stranding millions of people and halting the livlihood of the billions who depended on it.

Cut off from society, the survivors are having to rebuild a semblance of life, while the tensions of war shadow over the entire substation. As it was such a cultural icon of internationalism, it's difficult to know who are allies, who are enemies, and who are those just trying to live from day to day.

Welcome to Dryad-Fellows Substation X. Enjoy your stay, Spindowner.

Upcoming Demo

It's now (sort of) possible to create characters, rooms, exits, and move around in RPG. I've been breaking up the code into various contributed modules, introducing in the newest release: RPG Action, RPG Event, RPG Skill, and the rudiments of a ruleset built on top of Drudge: MUDSlinger, which introduces basic combat. I've been adding new hooks to allow modules to interact more simply to create more complex results. I'm also moving things in the direction of Drupal 6.

Describing End Result

When this is all up and running, I see the "final" version being something like this:

A new user to the site sees the welcome message, a big "Play Game" button, and a status of the current game state (player rankings, completed quests, etc.) There are also links to wikis, blogs, and forums, as well as the various group pages (when public).

Bacteria

Life has had a long time to evolve, far longer than humans thought in the pre-singularity eras. As earthers first learned when they sent increasingly sophisticated satellites and probes to explore their interstellar neighborhood, the galaxy was anything but a sterile void. Vast clouds of bacteria floated between the stars, seeding life in every niche, evolving into exotic and complex life forms everywhere they landed.

Vaughn Arch

The Vaughn Arch derives its name from its ornate entrance in sector TR-7. Once an exclusive club for wealthy business persons and government officials, it has transformed into the ad hoc governmental seat for what is now known as the Red Quadrant.

Already famed for its exclusive luxuries, the Vaughn Arch epitomizes the excesses of modern society. The Red Quadrant is known for corruption and hedonism. Some of the wealthiest inhabitants of the substation live here, and their mercenary soldiers are known for their ruthlessness and iron-fisted rule of the underprivileged.

The Singularity and You

The depiction of the Spindowners site is meant to represent a post-singularity environment. However, in many ways, the people living in the substation are the people left behind. Although post-human compared to people living in the early 21st century, even the most intelligent, wealthiest, and most privileged are little more than mites compared to the minds that continue to transform themselves throughout the galaxy.

Plasma leeches

Small, individually only four to ten centimeters long, and difficult to detect in the plasma streams they inhabit, plasma leeches are the scourge of starships and power stations throughout the galaxy. An infestation can be a costly affair, both in terms of drained energy, and in the costs of extermination.

Skurler

Wielded primarily by the Kraken Guard, the skurler is occasionally found carried by others (though it is illegal in Kraken society to trade or sell skurlers). When powered, the skurler drains a tremendous amount of power and emits a loud crackling sound, giving it a nickname of "plasma whip" or "lightning stick".

Mlastic

The word mlastic derives from biomass plastic, which was most probably the name given by an ancient biotechnologies corporation. The inner walls of the substation are made of this living substance, which, among other functions, converts carbon dioxide into oxygen for the benefit of some of the air breathing organisms on board. Living solar panels on the outer wall of the substation are another integral part of this symbiosis.

Mlastic is a hard, porous substance with microscopic pixels that take on colors programmed by its cellular subneural circuitry to display any

Steamchiggers

It's unknown whether they were created intentionally and became rogue, such as by an ancient robotics manufacturer, whether they were created as a practical joke, or whether they evolved spontaneously as a semi-intelligent complex system. Steamchiggers have been the bane of civilization for nearly all of recorded history, and probably had several origins in many places.

Whatever their origin, steamchiggers have lately become a pest on the substation. Steamchiggers usually infest industrial areas and reclaiming centers. In the warzones of the substation, they have claimed new niches in the chaos, finding refuge in abandoned quarters and demolished corridors.
